A Race Under the Northern Lights

Imagine the thrill of racing down a perfectly groomed slope under the mesmerizing glow of floodlights, with the possibility of the Northern Lights dancing above. This is what makes the Aurora Cup in Geilo truly unique. The competition kicks off with two adrenaline-pumping Super G races on December 17th, where athletes will push their limits on long, fast courses designed to test their precision and speed. The action continues on December 18th with a challenging Giant Slalom race, where competitors will navigate a technical course, showcasing their agility and control. The final day, December 19th, features a Slalom race that promises to be a nail-biting finish to an already electrifying event.

A Critical Path to GB Team Selection

For U14 and U16 athletes, the stakes are higher than ever. As a British Alpine Seeding System (BASS) registered race, the Aurora Cup is a key qualifier for GB team selection, making it a pivotal event for those aiming to make their mark in the competitive world of alpine skiing. The race is open to international competitors, attracting talent from across Europe and beyond, including local Norwegian ski clubs. This diverse field ensures a high level of competition and provides a valuable experience for all participants, regardless of their home country.

Inclusive and Family-Friendly

The Aurora Cup is a celebration of ski racing for all ages. While the focus is on developing the next generation of ski champions, the event is inclusive, offering categories from U10 to U18. In a unique twist, the Giant Slalom race on December 18th is also open to Masters, giving parents and older enthusiasts the chance to take to the slopes alongside the young competitors. This family-friendly aspect of the Aurora Cup makes it an event where everyone can participate, creating an environment of camaraderie and shared passion for the sport.

The Perfect Setting for Adventure

Geilo, with its panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and pristine, powdery slopes, is the perfect backdrop for the Aurora Cup. The town is renowned for its world-class ski facilities and its welcoming atmosphere, making it an ideal location for both athletes and their families. Off the slopes, the region offers a range of winter activities, from dog sledding and snowshoeing to relaxing in cozy mountain lodges, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in the magic of a Norwegian winter.

Prestige and Prizes

No competition is complete without rewards, and the Aurora Cup does not disappoint. Prizes for the top three finishers in each category are sponsored by Panda Optics, Dynastar, and Lange—brands synonymous with excellence in the skiing world. Winning at the Aurora Cup not only brings the thrill of victory but also the prestige of being recognised by these leading industry names.

Overall Aurora Cup Champion - Sponsored by The Cairngorm Reindeer Herd

The Aurora Cup’s overall champions in the U10, U12, U14, and U16 categories will receive a unique prize sponsored by the Cairngorm Reindeer Herd—adoption of a reindeer. U10 and U12 winners are determined by their combined Slalom and Giant Slalom times, while U14 and U16 champions are based on combined Slalom, Giant Slalom, and Super G performances. Winners will receive a certificate, a photo of their adopted reindeer, information about the herd, and special souvenirs. They’ll also enjoy a complimentary visit to the herd in Aviemore, Scotland.

Additionally, champions will be awarded a Highland Quaich, a traditional Scottish drinking cup symbolising friendship and honor. The combination of the reindeer adoption and the Highland quaich trophy makes this prize not only a recognition of their athletic prowess but also a celebration of cultural heritage, offering a truly unforgettable reward for their hard-earned victory.
